May 5, 2006

The year 2006 seems to be the year for
illegal immigration. As President Bush
struggles to press an illegal immigration
reform plan through Congress, some commentators
note that the Republican Party's marriage of
Roosevelt Republicans and Christian
Consevatives is on the verge of divorce with
prominent conservatives jumping ship
daily. Massive nationwide and local
protests have brought brought this issue front
and center.
Nationally, reform plans have stalled in Congress as legislators are buffetted by salvos from all sides. Yet in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Jerry Kilgore, Del. Dave Albo, and even Del. Jeff Frederick (who calls considers himself hispanic) continue to demagogue illegal immigrants for political gain.
Kilgore - "Kilgore Pulls Day Laborer Debate Into Va. Campaign," The Washington Post (Aug. 9, 2005)
Del. Albo - "Republicans Set Sights on Illegal Immigrants," Richmond Times-Dispatch (11/2/05)
Del. Frederick - "The Wrong Approach to Illegal Immigration," The Washington Post (2/7/06)
- Do these guys know something Democrats don't?
- Will the business community continue to peel off the GOP?
- What does this mean for the future of the Democratic Party?
The NVDBC, welcomes Board Member Walter Tejada and Dan Restrepo to our May Meeting to bring focus and clarity to our debate on this issue. Supervisor Tejada was elected to the Arlington County Board of Supervisors in a Special Election in March, 2003. He was born in El Salvador and emigrated to the United States at age 13. Before being elected, he studied at George Mason University, worked as an investigator, a business consultant, and an aide to Congressman Jim Moran.
Mr. Restrepo is a Senior Policy Advisor at the Center for American Progress. Dan is responsible for the Center's work related to the United States and its place in and relationship with the rest of the Americas. He is a first-generation American of Colombian and Spanish parents, spent three years as an associate at the law firm of Williams & Connolly LLP, served as an attorney for the Florida Democratic Party during the 2000 election recount, worked as the Research Director for the Florida Democratic Coordinated Campaign, and served on the Democratic staff of the House International Relations Committee.
Bring your questions, meet fellow Democrats in the business community, and raise money to elect future Democratic candidates!
