This year, brings the low point in the
Virginia voter turnout cycle and also the
Democratic Party's last opportunity to
recapture the Virginia State Senate before
redistricting in 2001.
Through many hard-fought battles, the Democratic Party has clawed its way back to regain two seats in the Senate and seven seats in the House of Delegates, but another vicious redistricting cycle could set the Democratic Party back another decade.
Having a seat at the redistricting table is critical to competitiveness. The Democratic Party of Virginia has dubbed the objective of this year's elections as "21-51" to emphasize the important of capturing a majority of seats in the legislature.
Sen. Mark Herring is an attorney in Leesburg, Virginia, a rising star, and the newest member of the Virginia Senate after being elected in a special election in January, 2006. Del. Kristen J. Amundson has been a member since 1999 representing the Mount Vernon portion of Fairfax County. She was previously elected to the Fairfax County School Board where she had served for over a decade. Come hear Sen. Herring and Del. Amundson discuss the hot races this November and the prospects for Democrats winning control of the oldest legislature in the Northern Hemisphere.
